    I would suggest going through the 3rd lecture on Turbulence in this course as a reference for this.
    But to answer this question, as you know wall function is derived based on non-dimensional velocity and non-dimensional distance from the wall. This helps to understand the velocity profile near the wall without really solving it with very fine mesh near the wall. Now if flow separation occurs, the turbulent velocity boundary layer is not going to be the same as without separation. An example is a region with an adverse pressure gradient on the aerofoil. In such a case wall function will not help us, instead, we need to have a finer mesh there and capture the velocity profile/turbulent flow.
